XXII: Dusk

All of the fragile leaves
have long since fallen from these trees
and now – now a gentle wave of wind
follows the sloping earth
down to the surface of the river,
the blushing bride of the diminishing sky,
while a slow-burning kaleidoscope sunset
scatters gilded red and orange light-splinters
beyond the cityscape, beyond the nape of the land,
to escape the emerging shadows of the night.
